Biography

Dr. Emory Smith Winship VIII is a board-certified internal medicine physician whose approach to medicine is rooted in service, problem solving, and building meaningful relationships with his patients. After years of caring for patients in hospitals across military, community, and rural settings, Dr. Winship was drawn to primary care by the opportunity to develop the long-term physician-patient relationships he valued most throughout his career.

A Marin native, Dr. Winship earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. He completed his internship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, followed by Naval Aerospace Medicine training in Pensacola, Florida, and his Internal Medicine residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

His osteopathic training also shapes his whole-person approach to medicine, looking beyond individual symptoms to consider how different aspects of a patient’s health and well-being work together.

Dr. Winship began his medical career as a physician in the United States Navy, combining his desire to practice medicine with a commitment to serving his country. As a Navy flight surgeon, he cared for a Marine Corps squadron and deployed alongside the Marines before returning to complete his Internal Medicine training.

Following residency, Dr. Winship helped establish the hospital medicine program at Camp Pendleton and served as a teaching attending during the COVID pandemic. After leaving the Navy in 2022, he continued practicing as a teaching attending in community and rural hospitals. These experiences gave him the opportunity to care for patients with a wide range of medical needs while developing a particular strength in navigating complex health concerns and helping patients understand their care.

As part of his osteopathic approach, Dr. Winship also incorporates Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Treatment (OMM/OMT), hands-on techniques he uses as an additional tool for certain musculoskeletal concerns and sports-related injuries. Throughout his military career, he used these techniques while caring for thousands of Marines, sailors, and their families.

Over time, Dr. Winship noticed a recurring question from his hospitalized patients: Could he continue caring for them after they went home? Those conversations helped inspire his move into primary care and his return to the Marin and San Francisco community where he grew up.

Dr. Winship describes himself as an advisor and partner to his patients. He practices patient-centered, whole-person, evidence-based medicine and believes the strongest physician-patient relationships are built on mutual respect, open communication, and understanding. He enjoys answering questions, helping alleviate the anxiety that can come with medical concerns, and giving patients the information they need to feel confident about their health.

His philosophy is simple: doctors do not just save lives, they help people live. At Discover Health, concierge medicine gives Dr. Winship the time to put that philosophy into practice by truly getting to know his patients, understanding their goals, lifestyle, and overall well-being, and working alongside them to support their health over the long term.

Teaching has also been an important part of Dr. Winship’s career. His experience training future physicians reinforces his own commitment to staying current with the latest evidence, guidelines, and advances in Internal Medicine.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Winship is an equestrian who rides English show jumping. He also enjoys traveling, hiking, playing pickleball, and spending time outdoors. Returning to the Bay Area brings his career full circle, giving him the opportunity to care for patients in the community where he grew up.

Dr. Winship is now accepting new patients at Discover Health in San Francisco.
