Biography
Dr. Sophia Hurd, MD, is a deeply experienced board-certified pediatrician whose approach to care is shaped by evidence-based science, a global perspective, and the lived experience of being a parent. Born and raised in Hawaii, she left the islands to attend Stanford University and later earned her medical degree at the University of Washington, the nation’s top medical school for primary care. She returned to the Bay Area for her residency at Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where she trained alongside Dr. Nicole Glynn and developed a strong foundation in comprehensive, relationship-centered pediatrics.
Over the past two decades, Dr. Hurd has cared for thousands of families across a wide range of clinical settings, and most recently as a founding physician of the UCSF Laurel Heights clinic. A consistent theme has guided her career: giving families the time, reassurance, and thoughtful guidance they deserve. Over time, her practice naturally began to resemble concierge medicine: deeply personal, highly accessible, and rooted in trust.
Dr. Hurd’s experience practicing medicine internationally has also shaped her philosophy. She has provided care in eight countries across four continents, working in Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, South America, and Cuba. These experiences showed her that great medicine hinges on active listening, adaptability, and partnership.
Becoming a mother to twins further transformed the way she practices. She understands firsthand how stressful it is to have a sick child and how powerful it is to have a pediatrician who listens and helps parents feel confident in their decisions. She believes parents know their children best, and her role is to provide clear information, evidence-based guidance, and steady reassurance.
A lifelong learner, Dr. Hurd attends multiple UCSF pediatric lectures each month and stays up to date through conferences, medical podcasts, and teaching opportunities. She has mentored medical and nursing students, participated in community health outreach programs, volunteered with Operation Smile, and also educated incarcerated mothers in San Francisco about childhood illnesses.
Outside of work, Dr. Hurd loves dancing and now shares her love of music and movement with her own children. When she is not in the clinic, she loves spending time with her husband, their young twins, and the family’s Maltese. As both a mother and a pediatrician, she feels fortunate that her work allows her to support children and families as they grow, and she looks forward to helping your family thrive.
At Discover Health, Dr. Hurd is excited to bring together her clinical expertise, her global and cultural perspective, and her deep commitment to long-term relationships. She looks forward to partnering with families, supporting children through every milestone, and creating a warm, connected experience where parents feel heard, supported, and confident every step of the way.
Dr. Hurd is now accepting new patients.
