Optimal Health Physical

It is an unfortunate truth that cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are two of the most preventable diseases with diet and lifestyle modifications.

With much research, we have learned that having a heart attack or stroke is much more intricate than simply having elevated cholesterol. Knowing this, the Optimal Health Physical was designed with true disease prevention in mind and is one-of-a-kind in the San Francisco Bay Area.

During this physical, your personal and family history will be considered to understand where you may need the most support. Our team will collaborate with you to develop a plan that meets your individual needs.

The optimal health physical includes:

  • An extensive intake with our internist
  • Advanced Testing:
    • Carotid CIMT Ultrasound
    • FotoFinder for mole mapping
    • Body Composition Analysis
    • EKG and Lung Health (Spirometry)
    • Comprehensive Blood Testing:
      • Diabetes Markers
      • Cardiovascular Markers
      • Cardiovascular Genetic Markers

carotid CIMT

The carotid intima-media thickness test (CIMT) is a measure used to diagnose the extent of carotid atherosclerotic vascular disease. The test measures the thickness of the inner two layers of the carotid artery – the intima and media – and alerts physicians to any thickening when patients are still asymptomatic. Early detection may indicate the need for a more aggressive approach to managing the risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke. Aging is a contributing factor to increased carotid intima-media thickness. Other risk factors include high lipoprotein levels, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Physicians use CIMT testing to determine the “age” of the carotid arteries. Knowing that patients may not be experiencing the symptoms of artherosclerosis, there still may be subtle changes in artery thickness. Armed with this information, physicians may develop an aggressive medical approach by prescribing medications such blood pressure and cholesterol lowering agents and aspirin, and patients may be encouraged make lifestyle and dietary improvements.

For prevention of skin cancer, it is important to monitor moles yearly. Unfortunately, without adequate documentation, a growth or change can be missed. FotoFinder is a computerized mole-mapping system that your physician uses to create an accurate set of photos of your moles. The high resolution camera is connected to a computer and transfers all photos directly the doctor’s database, giving your doctor the ability to compare your moles with photos from your initial visit and immediately identify new moles or changes to existing moles on your body. An added benefit of FotoFinder is that your doctor can provide a copy of your photos on CD for self-examination at home. All patients, whether first-time or returning, can feel safe that any changes or new moles will not be missed with the FotoFinder system.

body composition analysis

This non-invasive and quick tool provides measurements of body fat in relation to lean body mass. It is an integral part of a health and nutrition assessment.

Research has shown that body composition is directly related to health. A normal balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity. Excess fat in relation to lean body mass and altered body composition, can greatly increase your risks for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and more. Our Body Composition Analysis allows for early detection of an improper balance in your body composition, which fosters earlier intervention and prevention. It also provides a measurement of fluid and body mass that can be a critical assessment tool for your current state of health.

Since “fat loss” is the goal when people set out to lose “weight”, and “muscle gain” is the goal when people set out to gain “weight”, we are able to clearly monitor body composition changes (fat weight vs. lean fat-free weight). Rather than feeling frustrated with the scale, health-conscious people are usually very happy to learn of their progress when viewing these results.

The electrocardiogram measures the electrical signals of the heart and records the hearts rhythm. It detects past and current abnormalities, such as heart attacks or abnormal heart rhythms. It is a helpful document to have on your medical record in case of a future-health concern.

Spirometry measures your lung health and function. Through a flow meter device, breathing is analyzed to test for respiratory disorders such as asthma and emphysema.

Advance Laboratory Testing

Our advanced laboratory testing is a comprehensive lab panel that gives us a window into your current state of health. The extensive testing includes biomarkers, lipoprofiles, glucose metabolism, genetic screening and markers of inflammation. Cholesterol testing and cardiovascular risk profiles are determined by magnetic resonance, which can detect the size and number of individual cholesterol particles. The vital information from your laboratory data provides the foundation for your wellness plan.
